Personal Bio

Location: Linda Senn was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and has spent her entire life there except for the years when she attended Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. She currently lives and walks in Kirkwood – a historic, tree-lined suburb of St. Louis.

Writing: She realized when she took her college entrance exams that she wanted to make a career of writing. One aspect of those exams involved writing an on-the-spot essay. To her surprise, she romped right through one on “Fidel Castro,” pulling in facts, analyzing and synthesizing them, and finishing with a solid conclusion. It was a revelation.

Two people played pivotal roles in Linda's writing career: her 7th grade teacher, Mrs. Hartig, and author Beverly Letchworth. When Linda wrote a particularly insightful book report in 7th grade on Louisa May Alcott’s An Old-Fashioned Girl, Mrs. Hartig gave her a resounding “F,” assuming she’d copied it word for word from the book cover. Linda showed her the book, which contained no such text, and her teacher changed her grade to an “A+” – making Linda realize she’d written adult-level prose. Years later when Linda took a Creative Writing class to freshen her skills, Beverly Letchworth gave her all the encouragement and specific compliments she needed to embark upon her writing career.

Personal: Linda is the mother of two children and grandmother of three (soon to be four) adored grandchildren. An only child herself, she grew up with an alcoholic mother and devoted father and learned responsibility early on. She has warm memories of her maternal grandmother, Mam, about whom she wrote the loving poem that appears in The Many Faces of Journaling. Another honored touchstone was her aunt, Marguerite Senn Waugh, who always supported Linda’s writing, as well as her parenting and ways of helping others. Linda married at 25, but after 26 years, her marriage ended and she started over again as a single.

Favorite Pastimes: Not surprisingly, Linda loves to read, especially books on other cultures and traditions, anthropology, spiritual growth, the environment and of course work-related books. Among her favorites are Pilgrim Heart: The Inner Journey Home by Sarah York; Csikszentmihalyi's Flow; Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff; and Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice: An Ethnobotanist Searches for New Medicines in the Rain Forest by Mark J. Plotkin.

Good conversation is another of life's treats. Anne Morrow Lindbergh said, "Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after." – a belief shared by Linda.  She also enjoys live theater, especially the plays at St. Louis' Repertoire Theater, the ArtLoft, and Kirkwood Theatre Guild. "Blithe Spirit," "Arcadia," and "Everything’s Ducky" head her top-ten list so far. Folk music, particularly acoustic guitar, and foreign movies are also on that list, and she often does her preliminary book and workshop script writing at the local Kaldi’s or Starbuck’s.

Linda discovered long ago that being out in nature boosts her spirits and untangles the knots of everyday life. “You can clear away a lot of cob webs by floating leaf boats down a sweet lazy creek.” Reconnecting with the natural world is an essential part of her life.
